Though we’re always happy to talk through the process with businesses from the local area, we know that sometimes it’s nice to do your own research into the topic, so can highly recommend the gov.uk website as a good starting point if you are considering taking on an Apprentice. Their dedicated webpage – https://www.gov.uk/guidance/employing-an-apprentice-technical-guide-for-employers – highlights the terms and conditions that you need to meet in order to employ an apprentice, and also gives advice about contracts and pay. The other useful feature of this page is it’s ‘things to check’ section – a checklist that highlights some of the most important factors that a business needs to consider to ensure that everything is in place to take on an apprentice correctly (and legally!). The checklist covers things like the eligibility of the apprentice (i.e. that they have the right to work in the UK), that the contract of employment has been drawn up correctly and signed by all parties involved, and that the training provider for the delivery of your apprenticeship is relevant, reputable and can help your apprentice work towards their ‘end point assessments’ in order to reach the industry apprenticeship standard.
